1965 - Where are we going?

We're going somewhere, maybe the start of a trip? To where? As usual, we are dressed nicely. Charlie in his cool surfer stripe shirt. I do remember that rainbow striped shirt. I've always liked rainbow colored things. Looks like Charlie and I have things to 'do' in the car. Not sure how Pam's stick horse fits in. Also, I like more than two years older than Charlie. In the front yard of Wilhaggin home.

Here we are back in Aptos, Pam is in the water, the surf looks rather wild. But not as strong as the north shore of Oahu!

1965 - Too cute by half

The kids are trying to have a cute pose here. Results could have been used on a halidya card. Pam, Charlie and Sandy in front of that same doorway. I used to really like those satin hair ribbons, I had them every color of the rainbox. And I used to be able to wear bangs, my hair was thicker...but not too much thicker. Again wearing a sweater and a pleated skit. I think I remember that white skirt.

1965 - On the way to Sunday School!

I think we are on our way to Sunday School in this picture. Pam look like it could be a Purim costume. We are dressed up, as usual, Charlie especially. I think that was one of the first sweater that mom made me. It looked like a bronzey brown but all of the filaments were all different colora, I thought it was quite cool. I seem to remember that skirt, the pleats would never lay right.

1965 - Thanksgiving in the new house

Pam in the family room/dining/kitchen of the Wilhaggin House. Looks like it could be Thanksgiving...might be 1964, just not sure. Looks like the cornucopia on the table. Those colonial style wall candle holders, where are they? I don't think my mom has them up any more.

I didn't get a chance to go inside when I visited in September but a peek in the back window shows that the cabinetry is the same.

1965 - Pam on the trike in front yard

Guess that was a tricycle. The trees are small, there are sidewalks and all of the shrubs are fairly new. The present owners said that the fruitless mulberry were gone by the time they got there in the late 70s. There are those junipers that Pam hated so heartily. Chilly and cloudy

Contrast with the front yard now. Too bad, I did not stand across the street to take a matching shot. The trees in the back are big and visible. Everything a lot more lush and shady.

1965 - Pam on bike

I'm thinking that this must be a tricycle because Pam's just in kindergarten but you sure can't tell from the picture. Sweet license plate there. Love the outfit, especially the turquoise leopard print pants. In the front of the Willhaggin house

1965 - Delia's lornette and hankie

My mother framed my great grandmother, Delia Zunder Weil's lace fan. Earlier than 1965. Then, as a companion piece, she framed her lornette (not sure about spelling, decorative glasses) and hankie as a companion piece. They still are in my mother's living room. I have always loved them.

1965 - Charlie driving a boat?

On this same boat trip maybe on the delta, I'm thinking it was the Hodges' boat but I don't really remember. Doesn't everybody look young. Bet Charlie enjoyed it a bunch

1965 - Three kids on the front step

Charlie, Pam and Sandy on the front step of the Wilhaggin home. Must be winter, looks chilly and the leaves are off the trees. Grass still green though (likely well fertilized with the chemicals du jour).

I remember the striped shirt and those red pants were the stretch pants with the stirrups.

Don't know what we are doing. Don't know what Sandy is holding in her hand, what's the white bar, can't be sure what position Pam is in.

Ideas?

1965 - Pam and Charlie in front yard in Wilhaggin

Wow, today we were looking at toddler pictures of Ilana. Pam, age 5, looks just like Ilana. Or does Ilana look like Pam. Especially the way they hold their body.

Charlie, again must be in Little League...see that could have been Danny and Ilana in that picture.

1965 - The redecorated living room

When we moved into the Wilhaggin home in 1964, my mother used an 'interior decorator' to buy new furniture for the living room. French Provincial or some such. The mural on the far wall was all the rage, not sure what it was supposed to be with it's turquoise and olive green hues. Actually there was a nice new dining room set that would eventually be in that far part of the room in front of the mural. With a china cupboard which will go against that bare wall on the left.

Actually, I am quite fond of these pieces, I liked the colors and the marble top tables. My mother still has a lot of these pieces in her overcrowded living room in Wesley Willows. My mother still has the bronze dragon candlesticks and, of course, the gold watch from my great grandfather (Charles Weil)

The ensemble pretty new and raw in this picture, not everything is in place. Despite its dated colors and its audacity, I was quite impressed with the whole getup. My grandparent's baby grand piano would eventually be in the upper left.

My mother's living room was quite the deal.

1965 - Sandy on a boat

This could be 1965. Mom and Sandy and we're on a boat. Maybe on the delta? Don't remember whose boat. The Hodge's?

1964 - Charlies' new bike - another view

Another view of Charlie on his new bike. He's looking proud. Look at that immaculate street!

1964 - Little league parade

Charlie and Mikey on the way to the Little League parade. My guess is that they are on different teams. Charlie belongs to the Seals, ergo the sign on side of the car and the blue crepe paper. Mikey has on a black hat, maybe he's on the Mounties (?). I don't quite remember it but likely the car was in the parade.

Of course, no little league for girls then, nobody thought such a thing. I look through my high school yearbook (class of '70), 75 pages of Boy's sports, zero pages of girl's sports. The way it should be as far as anybody knew. But, I would not likely have participated anyway. I was 'uncoordinated' and had my face in a book. But maybe if I and everybody I knew participated in sports from an early age, who knows?

1964 - Charlie has a new bike

I'm calling this what it is....1964! If we are in the arden park home, it's 1964, who care how I marked it. Or how father marked it.

Charlie has a brand new red bike here. Maybe for his 10th birthday? I hope he can tell us more about it.

1965 - Kids on the front lawn

Again 1964, because of the Arden Park home. In the front yard. I'm guessing the two bigger kids are Charlie and Mikey (Wohlleb) and the two younger kids are Pam and Eddie (Wohlleb). The Wohllebs lived next door and had six kids. Tommy, Judy, Patty, Mikey, Jimmy, Eddie. When Dennis and I visited in September, we stopped by. Dr. Wohlleb (a dentist) was there, he was very frail. We did chat with him, he remembered mom and dad.

1965 - Pam going to party

Really 1964 because this picture is in front of the Arden Park home. Everything looking neat and tidy. My house and yard never look like that. It's because I am more interested in reading, blogging and talking to people. I know that there were 'gardeners' who took care of the front yard and a teenager named Chuck who mowed the backyard

1965 - Sandy and Pam in backyard

This is another 1965 but it really must have been 1964 picture because we are at the Arden Park home. She's 5, I'm 11. I don't remember that dress but there's something about that bow that looks like it's on a vented hem that somehow seem's familiar. We are standing in the backyard in front of the garden that was in the swale of the yard. I'm also including a picture taken from about the same spot 43 years later. Of course, the pool is the first thing that catches your eye. I also notice that it's much clearer in the yard on the other side of the fence. I remember some rustic pool house being flush against the back fence.

1965 - Pam on trike

This was a '1965' box but it clearly is 1964 because we are still in Arden Park. Love those plaid pants that Pam is wearing. Also the period cars parked at the curb. How about the black and pink wagon? Early spring by the budding trees. They were reasonably good sized then but now they are huge.

I'm pairing this with a picture from nearly the same view taken in September. Much is the same, the junipers are gone and you can see the huge construction project going on next door. Cars parked at the curb still and the trees are huge.

43 year difference in the photos.

1964 - Pam in back yard

Pam started kindergarten about the same time that we moved to the Wilhaggin house. I remember that I had to change schools from Arden to Jonas Salk. I think we had not quite moved yet when school started. Mom took me to the bus stop to wait for the bus to the new school. I remember that harsh California light with those new homes. Nobody was on that corner. I waited by myself for the longest time (I was just starting 7th grade). No bus came. Nobody came. I didn't know what to do so I just waited. Luckily Mom swung back around to make sure I had made it on the bus and I was still dutifully standing there. We had missed the bus and Mom took me to school.

This house was still new, there was a patio and grass but not much else. I think that's a tiny camellia bush thereunder the family room window. The current owner has done a beautiful job with the landscaping. You can see what it looks like now, the later shot was taken standing farther back in the yard but you can see the three posts, the window and the slider.

1964 - Wilhaggin house

I realize that these slides may be out of order. I know that there are some marked 1965 which show the Arden Park home. In September 1964, my family made a 'step up' and moved to a larger home across Fair Oaks Blvd in the upscale Wilhaggin development. 5 bedrooms and a family room. Only a year old, a spec house that the builder had moved into. Apparently after my parents left in 1970, the house had quite a few residents of short duration and the current owners bought it in the late 1970s. You can see current pictures of this home and the Arden Park home in the azure-turquoise.blogspot.com We visited both these homes in September 2007 as part of the trip attending Dan Beittel's memorial.

The 1962 Belivdere "no touch car" wagon is in the driveway and my mother is dong something (not using a cell phone). The mulberry trees did not last long, they were torn out by subsequent owners.

One of the main reasons they moved was so that my sister and I did not have to share a room. Nice house.

1964 - Sandy at Mormon temple

I think this picture was taken at the opening of the LDS temple in Oakland. For some reason, it was open to the public prior to consecration and, for some reason, my parents felt that this was an unique opportunity that should not be missed. Possibly only I went, likely Charlie was too squirrely. So we went to Oakland and stood in a real long line and went on a tour of this opulent facility. I still have the souvenir book on my shelf somewhere. I could not see the point then of going to see this excess and, now over 40 years later, I still don't. I'm sure they felt that it was an important cultural event.

1964 - House under construction

Warning: as I look through these pictures I realize that the dating is not so accurate. For example, I have pictures of the Wilhaggin House in 1964 and the Arden Park House in 1965. We moved there in 1964 so I can tell that some of the slides are mis-marked. Not to worry, we'll go with it.

Here's a picture of the three kids. My guess is that this is the site of Zwisleer's home being built in Cameron Park. For some reason, in this picture I look like I have long legs. And I never NEVER had long legs.

1964 - Pam on her birthday

Here's Pam on her birthday. Had a bow (probably on a clippie) in her hair. Those bushes are still there. I remember then as strictly generic bushes.

1964 - Sandy's turquoise swimsuit

I remember that suit, it was a pretty turquoise color, I liked it a lot. Not exactly sure where this picture was taken. I think there was a semi-private pool where we might have taken lessons but don't really remember. Big difference..in California all pools are outside. My high school had a pool and it was outside, I don't remember it used very much.

1964 - Charlie has some fish

Aptos, Father and Charlie maybe went on a fishing trip or maybe just out on the pier. Apparently they caught these fish. Poor fellows but I think Charlie was proud!

1964 - HORSE Cunnnntree

I'm on some outing and looks like we are on a real ranch with a real-life cowboy added in. Likely a girl scout outing, I never had much to do with horses though such experiences were quite coveted. I was just probably way proud of myself for getting up on that fence and being able to sit on it. That kind of stuff was hard for me. And what a pretty place, clearly the California spring, maybe in the foothills?

What is that cowboy doing, I see an ear in the upper right.

To myself, I look like I'm just taking in the whole scene and pondering it. But who knows?

The title is a nod to my sister as a toddler. When we were on a ride and we entered a rural farming error she would sing out "This is HORSE CUNNNNNTREE!!"

1964 - Mystery harbor

We're on a boat again but where are we? Pam looks unhappy. The storage tanks on the left make me think we are near Richmond. That looks like some tall ship in the background. And what's the arch? I probably hated this picture and that blouse because that bra is showing....aack, I was probably mortified

1964 - Somewhere in the Mother Lode

Maybe Jackson or similar? A gold rush town in the foothills with some tourist aspirations in the mid 60s? My mother must have had her neck problems around this time because of the neck brace

1964 - My father on vacation

My father on that same kidless vacation. Maybe a hotel in Las Vegas. A few times, they went away leaving us in the care of one of the 'agency' babysitters. The one I remember was an older lady named Mrs. Bressie. It was ok, I didn't mind the agency babysitters. My father is 38 in this picture, he's lost much of beanpole physique and filled out a bit though he was never overweight. I think he had that bathing suit for decades.

Las Vegas wasn't developed so much in 1964. Can't identify the hotel. But they are having a good time.

1964 - San Francisco Bay

Charlie and Sandy got to go on a cruise on San Francisco Bay with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. I didn't remember that small span under the roadway near the Presidio. But, a nice day on the Bay and we have the front view! Is that possible Don Gittelson on the right? Not sure.

1964 - Mom ON VACATION!

Where was mom? Undoubtedly without the kids, those look like hotel towels on the lounges. She's having a good time. And looking good!

1964 - Another Sandy go to camp picture

Pam is right, I look too clean for it to be on the way home. The pink 1962 Plymouth No Touch Car in the background. I think I'm clutching the Brownie style camera that took dreadful black and white pictures.

1964 - Pam and Father on the beach

Pam and Father on the same beach outing. This is the pier a bit north of Rio Del Mar beach. The cement boat at the end of pier is clearly visible. The US Palo Alto, one of the few cement boats, tanker for us in WW I. But I don't know why it ended up here. I think it was closed up by the time we got there. Pam was concerned that we would hang out by the supporting poles but I don't know what would be bad about that. It wasn't our regular beach and I'm not sure of the attraction. But Aptos is a beautiful area and I can understand why our parents came there. Pam has the patch on in this picture.

1964 -Rio Del Mar again

The view from the corner house onto the parking lot at Rio Del Mar at Aptos on Monterey Bay. I might have posted a similar earlier picture. Plenty of period California mid-60s stuff here. The cars, of course, also the white pants and largish hair of the woman walking away from the beach. The palm trees and the beach were looking good. Not sure what it looks like now but likely not as accessible.

However, San Clemente just 10 years ago was local and pretty cheap, we stayed there!

1964 - At Aptos Beach

I'm not sure if these slides are all marked correctly. Pam looks younger here than in the '1963' pictures. No matter. Here's another shot at Aptos. My parents loved the beach, we got to spend a week here most summers. My sister is wearing her glasses and eye patch. Can you imagine working with a toddler with eye patch at a sandy beach? My parents were determined to try this approach to get my sister's 'lazy eye' to work. This did not work but they sure put a lot of effort into it and my sister spent much of her early years in a hazy blur. I think that is the aptos pier in the background, it does look like MOnterey Bay but I'm not 100% certain.

On to 1964 - Sandy to camp again

I'm going to camp again. Am I happy because I'm going or because I'm coming home. I don't remember liking it very much at all. Just the whole idea did not appeal to me, I would rather be reading a book. The straw hat is look a little worse for wear...that's why I think I might be coming home

1963 - Sandy in Lexington

I know that we saw lots of historical sites when we were in Massachusetts...if only to get out of my grandparent's house. A picture of Sandy, age 11, in front of a marker in Lexington. How do I know, I read the inscription!

1963 - More trip preparations

Here we are again getting ready to leave on that trip. This is taken in the driveway of the Arden Park home which I just visited in September. The Taylor's house in the background is now being extensively remodeled, they have that whole house down to the studs. Notice the open horizon, hardly any big trees and the period car in the background.

We are all dressed up with our bags to take on the plane. I gotta say, my mom did a good job getting us all dressed up when she felt the occassion demanded it. I don't remember the aqua jacket. I might remember the rainbow striped purse. I was thinking that might be a Barbie case I'm carrying but it looks a little narrow for that.

All the ironing that's involved with that lifestyle....

1963 - Going on an airplane!

We are going on an airplane trip and it's a big deal. Here we are at the old Sacramento Airport. We are all dressed up, my little sister and I have on dresses with our white socks and Mary janes. My brother in his jacket and tie, my mother in her smart suit. You dressed to go on an airplane then, especially to fly all the way across the country. The airport is looking pretty smart itself, everything looking shiny and well-kept, nice garden and that pervasive California light. Within 5 years, the new airport will be built way north of the city and this airport will be mostly for small aircraft.

But in 1963, it was the way out of town. I think we flew from Sacramento to San Francisco and from San Francisco to Boston or Hartford most likely. I don't remember.

1963 - In my grandparent's back yard

I can't imagine my grandparents were very comfortable with this whole situation but we are visiting. I think they might have invited some children in the neighborhood to come over. Probably Pam in that great running shot. Maybe Charlie coming out the back door. My mother is sitting in the chair with my grandmother behind her. My grandfather is looking aghast at the whole situation. He loved us, really he did. As long as we were quiet. I had a very special relationship with my grandfather. I was the first grandchild and his favorite for the rest of his life. I was perfect; he loved me unconditionally in his stern uncompromising way.

1963 - Harvard Yard

My father must have taken this picture, I think that I was not there. Some kind of alumni gathering at Harvard, NOT a place for children according to my father. Indeed there are no children and no women in this picture. Some kind of Harvard gathering, commencement? something? I suspect that my grandfather (class of 1920) and my father (masters in aeronautical engingeering, 1949?) attended. What a sea of formally dressed white men....it would have been in the summer, anybody know if there is a formal event in the summer? Check out the top hats. Men in positions of power, here they are.
